Dr John Francis
Dr John Francis, National Geographic Education Fellow, is nicknamed “The Planetwalker”. For 22 years, he trekked and sailed around North and South America, carrying a message of respect for the Earth – not speaking for 17 of those years. During his monumental, silent trek, he earned an MA in environmental studies and a PhD in land resources.
Planetwalker is also the name of Dr Francis’s autobiography. He is an author, traveler, student and teacher. He has traveled from coast to coast across the United States, visited Antarctica and sailed across the Caribbean over 22 years. He has done all this without the use of motorised transportation.
One of the most important things John learnt during his walks and not speaking, was the value of listening.
