Workshop Topic:
Mindfulness in Law
There have been significant advances in the introduction of mindfulness meditation to the legal profession with specifically-designed programs for law professionals and students. The more complete integration of mindfulness into law practice and legal education could have profound consequences for the ways in which law is practiced, legal institutions function, and legal doctrine evolves. Specific benefits of mindfulness for law practice include overcoming the dominating influence of the traditional adversarial mindset, developing the skill of deep and open listening, and enhancing ethical practice. There are many more benefits and, in this workshop, Elaine will explore the growing research and development in this area. Drawing on her own personal experience working as a disputes and insurance lawyer in Sydney and London, she will also talk about the incredible impact of mindfulness on her own work life and career, as well as offer some helpful practices for the busy lawyer.
